A Wake-up Call About Fat Loss

Posted in Fat Loss on April 6th, 2008

If only it was as easy to achieve fat loss as it is to achieve fat gain. But are they really all that different? They both require that you eat certain types of food and maintain a certain lifestyle. And they both take time to see changes.  Nobody goes to sleep thin and wakes up fat. It’s not a sudden occurrence. You gain fat the same way you lose fat, one or two pounds at a time, generally stretched out over several years, or at least over several months. So why do you think you should be able to lose in a matter of days or a few weeks what your body has accumulated over months, or in many cases, years? There is no magic pill, no secret formula, and no quick fix for fat loss. It takes time. And it will never happen until you make the conscious choice to change what you eat, when you eat and how much you eat. But the most significant change you must make is how you think about food. Your attitude toward food is the most important change you can make. Despite what the restaurants and food manufacturers would have you believe, the purpose of food is not to make you feel better, provide entertainment when you’re bored or become the main focus of every gathering. Food is fuel for your body. That’s it.  It’s the only reason you should be eating. Most of us resist change. We have our little routines that make us feel secure and we tend to cling to them, especially when the subject of change is the food we eat. It’s a big reason why so many of us have failed at every attempt to diet; established habits are hard to break. But the truth is you’ll never progress toward a fat loss goal, or any goal for that matter, without making changes.

Because your body uses food as fuel, the type of food you choose to eat is paramount to how well your body is able to use it. Too many times we give our body high fat, high sugar, low nutrient foods and expect our body to continue to work properly. That would be the equivalent of filling your gas tank in your car with water and expecting it to run. If you want to achieve fat loss, you must begin to consider how well your body is able to use the food you’re giving it. In order to reach your goal of fat loss, you have to be willing to change what needs to be changed in your food choices.

For most of us, this means you probably can’t continue to eat what you’ve been eating. After all, those are the foods that put the fat on in the first place. Without changes to your food choices, along with changes to your activity level, sustained fat loss is not possible. It isn’t what we want to hear, but it’s the truth.
