“Fitness’ is defined as the state or condition of being fit or able to perform in specific sports and meet daily activity requirements. Yet, an important question remains. Fit for what? Some people are fit for running short distances, but have no endurance for long runs. Others are fit for a specific sport such as tennis or golf, but don’t necessarily have the fitness to perform well in other sports.
Some people focus on weight training and are very strong, but not flexible. What about people who are flexible, but have no strength or endurance? Are they fit?
Fitness is an elusive term at best and is open to the interpretation of the person using the term. Most people seek general overall, well rounded fitness! This means they don’t let life’s activities get in the way of having fun and experiencing full participation. So, the goal is to be able to do it all, at least to a moderate degree. If a friend calls to go kayaking or hiking for an hour or two, you can do it. If your spouse wants to go for a light jog, you can enjoy that too. If your child challenges you to play soccer or kickball in an open field, you are not left on all fours gasping for air. Here are ways to enjoy better fitness through exercise, regardless of your circumstances.
