The Power of Good Posture

Posted in Exercise Programs, Health and Wellness on April 16th, 2008

Proper posture puts the body in a state of peak efficiency by:

1. Ensuring that the muscles of the body are aligned for efficient functioning.
2. Allowing for safe shock absorbtion and distribution of force throughout the body.
3. Alleviating excess joint stress.
4. Influences efficient neuromuscular communication.

What to look for when checking your posture:

1. Forward Head = tight cervical extensors, weak cervical flexors
2. Protracted Shoulders = tight pectorals and lats, weak scapular retractors
3. Anterior Pelvic Tilt = tight hip flexors and lumbar extensors, weak glutes and abs
4. Posterior Pelvic Tilt = tight hamstrings and abs, weak hip flexors
